On July 5th 1946 French Engineer Louis Réard unveiled his daring invention that we’ve been in love with it ever since! Sixty-six years ago, the bikini was born.
It was named after Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific but Réard’s design was so daring that Parisian models refused to wear it. The bikini in question was a string bikini with a g-string back and was printed with newsprint as an allusion to all the headlines it would generate.
Happily a nineteen- year-old exotic dancer called Micheline Bernardini accepted the challenge and swimwear has never been the same! Girls, don’t forget though that, according to Réard’s ads from the time, a two piece isn’t a genuine bikini "unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring.
