Brigitte Helm (1906 - 1996)
The German actress is remembered for her dual role as virginal Maria and her lavish robot double, in Fritz Lang's legendary 1927 silent film, Metropolis. She obtained the role at only 18 after her mother had secretly sent photographs of Brigitte who never aspired to become an actress, to the director. Refusing to leave her country for Hollywood, she acted in a few other films before retiring in 1936 and settling in Switzerland after fleeing Nazi Germany with her Jewish husband. After ending her career, Brigitte Helm refused all interviews and public appearances which increased her mysterious legend. To her, her film career was completely vain and she much preferred being a housewife: the honourable Maria had taken over the seductive robot.
