Theda Bara (1885 - 1955)
The American actress moved to New York in 1908 and made her Broadway début the same year, becoming a popular stage comedian. Theda Bara made more than 40 silent films, until she retired in 1926, but most are now lost due to their destruction in a fire, in 1937. The actress is often seen as cinema's first sex symbol with her revealing outfits and exotic looks studios enhanced to draw the figure of a magical woman always surrounded by snakes and skulls. Theda Bara was the first vamp: the word was invented to describe her after her role as a seductive vampire in A Fool There was, in 1915.
