Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone moved to New York in 1978 to launch a modern dance career and performed into various bands as a lead singer. In 1981, she went solo and earned recognition with her first hit, 'Everybody' before releasing the successful Madonnaalbum, in 1983. She acquired immense popularity by pushing the boundaries of her music and imagery of her videos and concerts. With a penchant for scandalous and controversial behaviour, she was also an example for sexual emancipation: a powerful woman assuming her sensual ways. The 'Queen of Pop' diversified her professional activity and acted in various films gaining the critics' acknowledgement with her depiction ofEvita. Today, Madonna continues to reinvent herself and to be part of the pop culture industry and has influenced numerous young performers whilst she has also become the author of children's books, a film director, a producer...pursuing her lifetime dream: 'I have the same goal I've had ever since I was a girl. I want to rule the world.'
