Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán will always astonish our modern eyes because of of his own modernity. Through the saints, monks and nuns he painted, he shows what color and flatness are. Bigger than life, his impressive figures enlighten his barrocco style stands in his luxurious clothing patterns. Never mind his lemons…Just like many other great master, his deep humanity lies right there, in the tiny mundane things of life, modest and still but dazzling, like Manet. Still-lifes reveal the bottom of the purpose: stare and paint, make them stare and finally see reality on its wild side. An exhibit just started in the Centre for Fine Arts of Brussels and will go through May 25.
